CTOTUS - Technological and Operational Ability for the Usage of Space in Tuscany

Strengthening the integration of existing skills in Tuscany in the field of construction and use of methods and tools for space observations.

Observations from space encourage the development of technological capabilities and creation of new products and services. Traditional instruments for astrophysical observations have often evolved in highly innovative tools for the observation of the Earth, by opening new ways for projects regarding the control of sea, land and all natural and anthropogenic processes that influence our environment and our economy.

In this field of application of space technologies, in recent years a new aerial platform has became available: it is capable of carrying out flights of long duration and perform stratospheric measurements with performances comparable to those of a satellite. These aircraft, though not suitable to perform continuous observations such as satellites, enabling rapid deployment of new tools. In Tuscany there are the experiences, skills, facilities and opportunities to participate in their development and especially to become actors in this field. To this end, main action of this project is the consolidation of the industry ranging from new scientific technologies to the design of new products, through the creation of new satellites and demonstration objects. The overall project objective is to enhance the integration of existing skills in Tuscany in construction and use of tools and methods for space observations, so as to increase capacity for innovation and research in aerospace and strengthen region's international competitiveness.

The operational objectives are:

  • development of techniques for the realization of sources and detectors capable of improving the performance of aerospace instrumentation;
  • investigation and optimization of instrumental alternatives and their possible configurations that can satisfy the observational requirements of future space missions;
  • identification and investigation of highly innovative techniques in observation from space to use them in design of demonstration avionics;
  • development of physical models for the description of the observed processes for the generation of products with high added value.
