MICRA - Interferometric measurement of short-range forces with atomic lattices

How surfaces affect fundamental forces.

This project aims at the investigation of fundamental forces in proximity of surfaces, using atomic quantum gases as a microscopic sensor. A quantum gas trapped in a lattice potential can be used for inteferometric measurement of forces with high spatial resolution and high-sentivity. We plan to investigate atom-surface forces due to the electromagnetic radiation (the Casimir-Polder force) and to gravity.

Important themes we wish to investigate are non-equilibrium Casimir-Polder forces and possible non-newtonian gravitational forces on small lengthscales. This project is funded by the Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica Nucleare (INFN) and is based on a collaboration between an experimental Unit in Firenze and a theory Unit in Trento.
