Vortices and turbulence in spinor BEC

Generation of quantum turbulence by stirring magnetic field in spinor BECs.

A spinor, or multicomponent BEC is shown to develop quantum vortices under the action of an external magnetic field, within the Gross-Pitaevskii description of the superfluid. The vortices appear where the magnetic field vanishes. These vortices can be created on demand anyplace within the BEC cloud and, therefore, open the possibility of generating quantum turbulence by simply stirring the magnetic field.

We study several types of stirring and show that a very chaotic flow is developed in the superfluid. We find a Kolmogorov cascade type in the kinetic energy spectrum and a white noise power spectrum in density and velocity fluctuations.
