A new value for the atomic mass of the electron
A new value for the electron's mass, almost one order of magnitude more precise than the present value.
We use single particles confined in a Penning trap to measure the magnetic moment (g-factor) of the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions. The results for several ion species represent to date the most stringent test of bound-state quantum electrodynamics calculations.
Most recently we performed (so far unpublished) measurements on C5+ and obtained an uncertainty of a few parts in 1011. From a comparison to accurate calculations we obtained a new value for the electron's mass which is more than one order of magnitude more precise than the present value.
