Nanoscale heat transfer, hot electrons and hot phonons in quantum cascade lasers

An overview on the fundamental processes controlling energy relaxation in terahertz quantum cascade lasers (QCLs).

I will review the fundamental processes controlling energy relaxation in terahertz quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) focusing on those inherently related with their peculiar nanoscale structure. The following experimental results will be discussed in the framework of a comprehensive model: the anisotropy of heat propagation; the establishment of a nonequilibrium population in selected electronic subbands; the generation of nonequilibrium optical phonon populations; the observation of laser-induced cooling of hot-electron populations.

In the final part of the talk I will also give a brief overview of our running and planned activities on the use of QCLs for the development of novel sensor systems, e.g. based on quartz enhanced optoacoustic spectroscopy and self-mixing interferometry.
