Microcavity polaritons: from quantum optics to quantum fluid
A look at the phenomena that emerge from combination of coherent properties of photons with the highly interacting features of polaritons' electronic states.
As quasi-particles, polaritons are a mixture of matter and light and in a semiconductor microcavity strong coupling between cavity photons and quantum well excitons can produce exciton-polaritons that show very interesting non-linearities, Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity.
During her colloquium, Professor Elisabeth Giacobino will present recent results on superfluid motion of polaritons and discuss the conditions under which this state occurs, some observations about its phenomenology and the quantitative agreement of experimental findings with theoretical predictions.
