Geological asymmetry of the Earth

Influence of Earth's rotation and tides on geodynamics and seismicity.

Dynamics of the Earth has been considered almost exclusively related to the effect of the planet cooling. However, there is evidence that the Earth is tectonically asymmetric, and that the shell of the planet has an average drift westward.

The distribution of seismicity and structure of the margins of the plaques indicates that the geodynamic evolution is also strongly controlled by the rotation of the Earth the resulting solid tides (image from Geophysical Research Letters).
